The Staff Accountant I shall have the primary responsibilities for maintaining financial procedures and confirming financial compliance through the preparation of the university reports and statements. Their role is to prepare and review financial information and organize it in a way that provides a clear picture of the company's fiscal health. This position will report directly to the Assistant Controller and AVP of Finance.

Essential Functions:
  • Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
  • Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections while maintaining the general ledger.
  • Coordinates with software vendors to maintain accounting software systems; recommends updates to enhance the accounting software.
  • Manages the purchasing and invoicing system.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Assist the assistant controller with internal and external audits and tax returns to ensure compliance.
  • Analyze financial information and summarize financial status.
  • Spot errors and suggest ways to improve efficiency and spending.
  • Participate in financial standards setting and in the forecast process.
  • Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Support month-end and year-end close process.
  • Document and log all journal entries to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to read and analyze financial reports.
  • Knowledge of Jenzabar software.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements:
  • At least one year's experience in accounting, finance, or related field in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends. (if applicable)
