The Senior Accountant I prepares, analyzes, and reviews financial statements using accounting principles for the Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) network. Reconciles accounts from the general ledger and prepares journal entries and month-end reports. Identifies complex accounting problems, researches solutions, and corrects problems. Examines financial statements and documents for conformance with accounting requirements and principles. May have lead responsibility for special projects. Participates in all levels of accounting activities within the finance department. This position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals while performing various complicated tasks. Demonstrates knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), standards, and procedures. Applies GAAP to carry out the core responsibilities of all assigned duties, special projects, and any other necessary responsibilities. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected along with leading the work of others.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Senior Accountant I at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Reconciliation, analysis, and adjustment of general ledger accounts are completed on a timely basis. Ensures accuracy of account balances. Ensures account activity complies with accounting standards. Use online research and review of original record sources to evaluate the appropriateness of account balance. Maintains accurate detail in support of the balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other documents that project the organization's financial position. Uses sound statistical methods to recognize and ensure accuracy.
Written and verbal communication is done in a manner that is clear, concise, timely, and accurately conveys the message. Language and content should be grammatically correct and presented in a way that is easily understood. Communicates with financial institutions, tax authorities, external auditors, corporate offices, and others, as needed, to correctly account for and report financial information.
Ensures that all reports generated provide meaningful and timely information. Provides customers with timely, accurate, and thorough responses to their inquiries. All audit work papers are completed and analyzed within appropriate time frames to allow for effective and efficient audits. Interacts with internal and external auditors as necessary.
Prepares and completes accurate journal entries by the closing date on a monthly basis: Compile/attach appropriate supporting documentation. Ensure approvals are obtained prior to filing. Entries are entered timely in the general ledger. Adheres to a monthly close calendar and meeting deadlines when deliverables are expected.
Identifies accounting problems and internal control weaknesses, researches possible solutions, and presents recommendations and conclusions to Senior Accountant and/or Management for further evaluation.
Contributes to and/or files the Federal/State payroll tax returns, quarterly state sales/use tax returns, Federal/State corporate tax returns, and annual reports.
Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant area of study or equivalent work experience.
Minimum of 4+ years of experience in accounting, or 2 years of public accounting experience with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in progress and to be completed within 2 years of hire.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Highly organized self-starter with efficient time management and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office (Excel) and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Prior hospital or healthcare experience.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) at hire or to be obtained within 2 years of hire per the above experience requirements.
